Britain’s most dangerous road for speeding has been revealed as the A282 in Kent, according to new research.
The busy stretch, which includes the Dartford Crossing, clocked up 26,920 speeding offences in 2020 despite lockdown, a Freedom of Information (FOI) request has found.
A section of the M25 in Surrey placed second on the list, where 23,558 offences were registered last year.
The M4 from Clayponds Avenue to Transport Avenue came in third, with 16,188 offences.
Data from the car rental service Wessex Fleet found that 167,448 speeding crimes were committed on the top 10 most dangerous roads in the UK in 2020.
Over a quarter – 45,226 – were recorded by the Metropolitan Police, with the force handing out a staggering 3,200 speeding tickets during the first month of full lockdown.
Just one northern road features in the top 10, the Aigburth Road in Merseyside with 14,476 incidents.
Stats show that northern roads are nearly 20 times safer than those in the south, with a total of 323,222 speeding offences recorded by Southern forces in the most dangerous list, and only 20,716 in the Northern regions.
In contrast, Britain’s safest road has been found to be Station Road, which is monitored by Dyfed-Powys Police and clocked up only 16 offences over the whole year.
In fact, the Welsh force looks after eight of the top 10 safest roads, on which 215 instances of speeding were registered in 2020.
Heol Y Bont and the A489, both also Dyfed-Powys roads came in at numbers two and three, with 17 and 18 offences respectively.
Penglais Hill, also monitored by the force, was joint third, also with 18.
Fifth place is the first road monitored by a force other than Dyfed-Powys, with the City of London Police registering 19 offences on Victoria Embankment.
The most dangerous and safest roads were worked out after Wessex Fleet sent FOIs to each of the 45 police forces in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Not every force answered in time, the data gathered covers hundreds of the UK’s roads and hundreds of thousands of speeding reports.
Each force that responded was then filtered by the 10 roads with the most cases of speeding, a total of 699,517 instances.
